CSV import

Bring a spreadsheet, an export from another tool or a pasted table onto a board in three steps.

Where to start

  • On an existing board: open the board menu in the header and choose Import from CSV.
  • For a new board: choose Import from CSV in the template picker. A blank board is created and the import opens on it.

Import is available to anyone who can edit the board's items, on every plan.

Step 1: upload or paste

Drop a .csv file, pick one from disk, or paste rows straight from a spreadsheet. The first row is treated as the header. The delimiter (comma, semicolon or tab) is detected from the file; quoted fields and line breaks inside quotes are handled. Up to 5,000 rows are imported per file; anything beyond that is ignored.

Step 2: map columns

Each CSV column gets a target. Columns whose header matches a built-in field (name, group, status, priority, due, start, person) or an existing column are mapped for you; change any of them.

TargetWhat happens
NameThe item name. Required; rows with a blank name are skipped.
GroupThe group the item goes into. Groups that do not exist yet are created.
StatusMatched against the board's status labels or keys, any case. Unmatched values leave the item in the first status.
PriorityMatched against the priority labels, any case.
Due dateA date. Unreadable dates are left blank and counted in the summary.
Start dateA date, for the timeline and multi-day calendar events.
PersonA workspace member, matched by full name or email. Unmatched names are left unassigned.
An existing columnAny custom column on the board. Dropdown values that do not exist yet are added as options.
New columnCreates a column of the type you choose and fills it from this CSV column.
SkipIgnore this CSV column.

Step 3: import

Items are created in the order of the file. Groups are created first, then new columns, then the items with their values, assignees and dropdown options. A summary shows how many items were created and how many statuses, priorities, people, dates or values could not be read. Nothing is imported twice: running the same file again creates duplicates, so trim the file first.

"When an item is created" automations do not run for imported items, so an import does not trigger a flood of notifications.

Item templates

For items you create by hand over and over, save one as a template instead. Open an item, choose Save as template, and it keeps the item's status, priority, column values and subitem names. Choose New from template from the board, or mark one template as the default so + Add item starts from it. A board holds up to 30 templates.
